The rider from the XDS Astana Team, Max Kanter, took the win on Stage 2 of Paris–Nice. Kanter won the bunch sprint after superb teamwork and a textbook lead-out from Mike Teunissen in the final kilometre of the stage. For Max Kanter, this victory is his first win at UCI WorldTour level, while for XDS Astana Team, it is the team’s first win at this level in the 2026 season. Winner’s statement: "Paris–Nice is a very prestigious race, and winning a stage here is something incredible (...) The final kilometres were pretty hectic and with 2 km to go we lost a lot of positions. My teammate Mike Teunissen kept his cool and I trusted him. Biniam Girmay (NSN CYLING TEAM) hit the ground running in his first race in EKOÏ, taking the opening stage of the Volta Comunitat Valenciana 2026 in a bunch sprint. First race, first win for the 25-year-old Eritrean, who edged it at the end of an extremely tight finale, ending more than a year without a victory. Initially identified as the best opportunity for a bunch sprint, the stage was made more complex by an unexpected attack from the GC leaders on the Puerto Los Madriños. The team nevertheless kept things under control thanks to a big collective effort and to Girmay’s ideal positioning in the finale. This success is all the more symbolic for the sprinter, so often second last season: « It took me more than a year to get back to winning… I’m super happy and motivated, and it gives me a lot of confidence. » Victorious in his season debut, Girmay pulls on the leader’s jersey, a reward he dedicates to his teammates, saluting « a perfect job right up to the final kilometer ». The newly formed NSN Cycling Team notched their very first win of the season thanks to Ethan Vernon, who powered to a commanding victory on stage 4 of the Tour Down Under in Willunga. After two frustrating bunch sprints in the opening stages, the script finally favored the British sprinter. The stage four route change, with Willunga Hill removed due to extreme weather, handed the fast men another opportunity — one Vernon seized perfectly. Determined to deliver NSN its first win in the new colors, Ethan Vernon launched his uphill sprint at the perfect moment to take a clear victory, while his teammate Brady Gilmore bagged 4th. « I really wanted to win here and kickstart the season in the best possible way. It’s a new team, a new project, new partners. Being the first winner in this jersey is something very special », said Vernon. Despite a tough day, marked by the DNFs of Jake Stewart (broken collarbone) and Corbin Strong, the team showed great adaptability and exemplary communication to turn things around and go for the win. Jarno Widar, 2nd consecutive victory The Belgian Jarno Widar (19 years old, [Lotto] team) added another achievement to his palmarès by winning the prestigious Tour du Val d’Aoste for the second time, one of the main races in the U23 calendar. 3 stages and 3'50'' lead overall Widar claimed victory in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th stages, which allowed him to secure the overall classification with a significant lead. In the 5th and final stage, he triumphed in a sprint finish at Breuil Cervinia, after a 119.5-kilometer route featuring a final climb of 25 km at 5.7% gradient. In the final general classification, Widar leads over the Ecuadorian Mateo Pablo Ramirez ([UAE Emirates]) by 3 minutes 50, while the Frenchman Jean-Loup Fayolle ([Arkéa-B&B Hôtels]) takes 3rd place at 4 minutes 33. A race in mourning The 2nd stage of the race was canceled following the tragic death of Samuele Privitera, a young 19-year-old Italian rider ([Hagens-Berman-Jayco]), which occurred after a crash during the first stage. An already impressive palmarès Jarno Widar confirms his status as a promising talent in cycling. Besides the Tour du Val d’Aoste (2024, 205), he boasts prestigious victories such as Liège-Bastogne-Liège, La Flèche Ardennaise, and the Ronde de l’Isard in 2025. Derek succeeds Michael... The maple leaf jersey changes shoulders but stays within the same team. Gee just clinched the title of Canadian road race champion, succeeding his teammate Mike Woods. An IPT Double The 199-kilometer race was marked by a decisive breakaway formed by Gee, Hugo Houle, and Luke Valenti, all from the IPT team. Taking advantage of their numerical superiority, Gee and Houle launched several attacks. Gee executed the decisive attack before the fifth and final lap, quickly creating a gap of 1 minute 30 until the finish in St-Georges. Behind, Houle takes the second place. The winner described the race as "very difficult, under challenging weather conditions", but was pleased with the team effort. Promising for the Tour Derek Gee is having an exceptional 2025 season. He won a stage and the overall classification of O Gran Camiño, finished third in the Tour of the Alps, and achieved his best result in a Grand Tour with a 4th place at the Giro d’Italia. Bravo Jake! After coming so close to his first victory in the WorldTour during the first stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné on Sunday — where he was the fastest behind the four main contenders for the general classification — Jake Stewart finally made it happen today in Mâcon, during the 5th stage. “My teammates positioned me perfectly. I launched before (Jonathan) Milan and managed to hold on to the line.” Thanks to the work of his teammates, notably Krists Neilands and Matîs Louvel, who helped reel in the breakaway of the day, Stewart was able to approach the final kilometer in an ideal position, with the invaluable assistance of Guillaume Boivin. Confident, the British rider launched his sprint from afar and delivered a powerful finish, irresistible to his rivals. This marks the second victory for the 25-year-old Brit in the colors of IPT, less than a month after his very first win during the final stage of the 4 Days of Dunkirk.
