How to know your hand size for gloves?

When you're new to cycling, you need to build the perfect cyclist's outfit to ride safely. For each garment or accessory, it is important to select the right size. Indeed, too big or too small, a garment could quickly prove to be uncomfortable. For this, it is necessary to refer to the size guide of the brand. Today, we suggest you find out how to know your hand size for gloves.

Why take your hand measurement?

To choose bicycle gloves that fit your hand perfectly, it needs to be the right size. Indeed, wearing gloves that are too tight or way too wide would be totally counterproductive, even dangerous. Gloves that are too small could compress your hands and therefore prevent proper blood circulation. Gloves that are too large could cause friction and therefore the risk of injury, probably very painful to hold the handlebars. In both scenarios, they could even prevent you from holding the handlebars properly, or even hinder you from braking (in the case of long gloves that are too big, for example) which could be very risky in an immediate danger situation where emergency braking is necessary.

How to measure your hand to choose gloves

To measure your hand so you can choose your gloves, you need to measure the circumference of your hand. To do this, equip yourself with a flexible dressmaker's meter (or tape measure).
Measure the circumference of your left hand if you are gaucher. If you are right-handed, you need to measure the turn of the right hand.
Take the tape measure and wrap your hand around the widest point that is at the top of your palm, at the base of your phalanges, without squeezing your hand. Note the resulting size.
Depending on the glove brand, it is not the circumference of the hand, but the width of the hand that is taken into account. In this case, instead of measuring the circumference of the hand, measure only the width, always at the palm of the hand, at the base of the phalanges. Note the size.
Sometimes, with some brands, especially for long gloves, you will also need to measure the length of your hand. To do this, take the measurement from the tip of your middle finger (the longest finger on your hand) to the hollow at the bottom of your palm, at the wrist.

How to choose the right glove size based on your hand measurement.

After taking the measurement of your hand size, it is necessary to refer to the glove size correspondence chart to choose the right size. Beware, this correspondence chart varies from brand to brand. So, depending on the brand you choose, you may not buy the same size as in another brand.
Depending on the brand, pairs of gloves come in sizes ranging from XXS to XXL to fit the largest number of hands. In other brands, the gloves will only be available in sizes S to XL. Be sure to choose the brand where the sizes fit you best so that you get the best fitting gloves possible.
If you are unsure between two sizes, take the size above.

If we take into account the measurement of the hand circumference, here is what each size corresponds to (size to be checked according to the glove brands obviously):

  • The size L corresponds approximately to a hand circumference of 24 centimeters;
  • The size XL corresponds approximately to a hand circumference of 27 centimeters;
  • The size XXL corresponds approximately to a hand circumference of 30 centimeters.

If we take into account the measurement of the width of the hand, here is what each size corresponds to (size to be checked according to the brands of gloves obviously):

  • Size S corresponds approximately to a hand width of less than 8 centimeters;
  • Size M corresponds approximately to a hand width of 8 to 9 centimeters;
  • Size L corresponds approximately to a hand width of 9 to 10 centimeters;
