Which bike to choose for gravel ?

Synonymous with travel, freedom and adventure, the gravel phenomenon is becoming increasingly popular in France and Europe. Feel like getting into it, but don't know which bike to choose for gravel? If versatility is the order of the day, there are all kinds of gravel bikes. What are their specificities? On which criteria should you base your choice? Discover our key tips for selecting the gravel bike that will meet your expectations.

More than a discipline, a philosophy

Right out of the American continent, gravel is a not so recent discipline, which has more and more followers in France. From its name meaning "gravel" in French, gravel invites to evolve on terrain of all kinds: roads, tracks, paths, trails...

Much more than yet another cycling discipline, gravel embodies above all a true state of mind: that of going on an adventure to quench an inexhaustible thirst for discovery. Leaving the main roads to take side roads, taking pleasure in riding differently in the heart of nature, feeling free and alive... this is what the gravel spirit is all about!

The gravel bike, a versatile bike

When we talk about gravel, we refer as much to the discipline as to the gravel bike. That's right, because manufacturers have developed hybrid bikes that are perfectly suited to the practice.

The result of an ingenious mix between mountain bike, road bike, cyclo-cross and VTC, the gravel bike is intended for all desires for a sporty use, in hiking or in urban environments. Ideal for long rides, it will seduce cyclotourists and bikepackers as well as mountain bikers and road cyclists. It's a bike that brings people together, a bike for traveling, discovering, dreaming!

As you will have understood, the gravel bike is above all a bike cut out for adventure. Its versatility offers infinite possibilities: it's up to you to define its limits!

The characteristics of a gravel bike

The gravel bike has a special design that allows you to ride on both roads and trails. It is interesting to know these specifics to choose your gravel bike properly.

Some elements have thus been redesigned with an emphasis on comfort and versatility.

The frame:

On a gravelbike, the geometry is comfortable, offering a raised position and a soft seat. There's a sloping frame, meaning a sloping, short top tube, coupled with a high head tube for a ride suitable for all types of terrain. Longer chainstays, thin seatstays, 27.2mm seat tube, reinforced front fork, tube deformation...all improvements for long and comfortable riding.

The frame is also equipped with a high head tube for a smooth ride

Wheels and tires: The wheels, rims and tires of gravel bikes have also undergone adaptations to optimize shock absorption and compensate for the lack of front suspension. The most common wheel diameters are 700C and 650B. In general, gravel tires are characterized by their width and the presence of light studs.

Brakes: gravel bikes have disc brakes, just like mountain bikes.

The drivetrain: mostly compact or semi-compact type with all-purpose gears.

The handlebars are similar to those of a road bike, with a flared shape for easy grip and steering.

Criteria for choosing your gravel bike

Now that you know the specifics unique to the gravel bike, it's time to look at the criteria for choosing one. There is not one gravel bike, but dozens! The important thing is to select a model that fits both your practice and your wallet.

The frame, depending on your practice

This is the first feature to determine. In reality, you will have to choose the material of your future gravel frame. There are three options available to you:

  • the steel frame: ideal for occasional riders on brittle terrain, it combines strength and comfort;
  • the aluminum frame: less heavy than steel, it offers a compromise between leisure and sport use with a good quality-price ratio;
  • the carbon frame: nervous and light, it is intended for sport use and represents the most expensive alternative.

Are you a road cyclist and want at times to venture into trails while planning to ride mostly on asphalt? A carbon gravel bike will be your best bet for a good feeling.

Are you a veteran and want to put away your mountain bike for more fun and lightness on the climbs? Opt for a steel or aluminum gravel bike.

You're in the mood for a little more fun

Do you feel like going hiking on your bike? An aluminum gravel bike will be the perfect travel companion.

All you need is a steel bike

Tires, depending on the terrain

Have you determined which frame you need? Congratulations! Now let's move on to the tires.

You should know that tires play a critical role in gravel. It is your way of approaching gravel and the use you want to make of it that will condition the choice of the model. That's right, you're not going to outfit your bike the same way if you're pedaling on tarmac, rolling forest trails or steep paths.

Here are some tips to help you find the perfect fit.

The section of gravel tires is generally quite wide and ranges from 25 to 55 mm, with a standard between 35 and 40 mm. What size tire should I choose? This varies depending on how much paved road you plan to ride:

  • the narrower tires are suitable for rides with many paved sections;
  • wider tires, beyond 40 mm, are mostly for off-road use.

In all cases, be sure to check the clearance available on your frame to accommodate consistent sections.

The tire cover, too, depends on the terrain:

  • Scored tires: the studs provide more traction and good grip on slippery, dusty trails. On the other hand, note that they will wear out more quickly when you pedal on the road.
  • Smooth tires: models with a smooth center tread are suitable for tarmac and hard ground in good condition.

Remember that in gravel, the key word is versatility. So you'll find a whole range of tires on the market, halfway between notched and smooth profiles. Enough to unearth the perfect pair for your practice!

One last recommendation: prefer tires mounted in tubeless to reduce the risk of punctures, which are particularly common in gravel.

Size, depending on your body type

While it is essential to think about the frame and wheels of your gravel bike, you must first and foremost choose a bike that fits you. This is imperative, at the risk of experiencing the ordeal once in the saddle. Indeed, a bad position on the bike will lead to discomfort and pain, even injuries.

To choose a gravel bike in your size, you need to measure the following two parameters: inseam height and arm range.

The price, depending on your budget

Of course, your wallet will also dictate your choice of bike. More and more gravel bikes are emerging as the sport gains popularity. There is now a wide selection available, at all prices!

The gravel cyclist's equipment

Gravel is also a clothing style in its own right. Gravel gear includes a comfortable outfit that's not too loose or too tight, a cap and a helmet.

You know all the keys to choosing your gravel bike, so happy shopping!
