The rules of the cycling school races

After finding out what the rules of road cycling were, we now offer to tell you all about the rules for cycling school races.

What is a cycling school?

The French Cycling Schools are affiliated with the FFC (French Cycling Federation) and aim to allow learning of cycling in all its forms with children but also to develop their autonomy.

There are three labels for cycling schools, and each club can join up to two labels, valid for two years:

  • The Baby Bike;
  • The cycling schools label;
  • The club competition label;

The categories of licensees

The cycling school being accessible from 4 to 14 years old, children are divided into different categories:

  • Pre-licensed: ages 4 to 6;
  • Chickens: ages 7 to 8;
  • Pupils: ages 9 to 10;
  • Benjamins: ages 11 to 12;
  • Minimals: ages 13 to 14;

It is the age the child will be in the year the license is valid that is used to determine the category in which they will be registered.

The different disciplines

Within the cycling schools, aspiring cyclists can engage in various disciplines such as:

  • The road cycling;
  • The cyclo-cross;
  • The track cycling;
  • The TTB;
  • The BMX.

Racing Rules

The racing in cycling school is highly regulated. Depending on the category to which the young cyclist belongs, there is a maximum distance to be covered, which ranges from 1km for pre-licensed to 30 kilometers for minimes for a road race for example.

Idem for the braquets used, their use is framed by the regulations:

  • Chickens and Pupils: 5.60m maximum;
  • Benjamins: 6.40m maximum;
  • Minimes : 7,01m maximum.

The departmental / regional competitions

At the departmental level, trophies and inter-school races are regularly organized so that young people from different cycling schools can compete against each other around several events such as sprints, agility events, races, etc. There are several rounds with different challenges throughout the year.

Children score points based on their results and the best among them are then selected to participate in the regional trophy.

National Competitions

Each year, the French Cycling Federation organizes French Cycling Championships for cycling schools. Participants are selected for these at the end of the regional championships after which each committee nominates two riders per category to represent it at the national level.

Now that the French Cycling Federation has decided to organize the championships, it is important to note that the participants are not selected for the national level
