Who is Sergio Henao?
At once puncher, climber and baroudeur, Sergio Luis Henao Montoya is an experienced rider. Two-time Colombian road champion, Checho notably won the 75th edition of Paris-Nice and recorded several stage victories.
Pushed by his father, he began cycling at the age of 16 in his native Rionegro mountains, before joining the amateur team Orgullo Paisa-Indeportes Antioquia.
In 2007, Sergio Henao entered the professional peloton with the Colombia es Pasión team. Persevering and tenacious, he won the Tour de Colombia in 2010, a title he had already won in the U23 category in 2008. At 22, he is one of the youngest in history to achieve this feat!
The rise of his career at Sky
This victory and his results in other national competitions give his career a real boost.
In 2012, the Colombian flew to Europe by signing a contract with the British Sky team.
After training at the Tour of the Basque Country, where he finished 13th, he made his dream of riding in a grand tour a reality. Very much on form, Sergio Henao lands a remarkable top 10 finish in the Giro d'Italia. His performance was doubly acclaimed as he climbed to the second step of the podium in the mountain classification.
The following year, he earned his first World Tour victory with his efforts on stage three of the Tour of the Basque Country. He also won the team time trial stage of the Giro. Checho competes in other prestigious races in which he positions himself such as the Flèche wallonne, the Tour of Poland and the Amstel Gold Race.
Revival and triumph in Colombia
After a 2014 season cut short by a crash at the Tour of Switzerland and concerns about his biological passport, Sergio Henao is back with a vengeance. In 2016, he participated in the Tour de France for the first time as a teammate of leader Christopher Froome and took 12th place overall.
In 2017, it was triumph for the South American: he was crowned Champion of Colombia on the road and winner of Paris-Nice ahead of Alberto Contador. He captures the national championship title again in 2018.
After seven years with Sky, Henao joins a new UCI World Team cycling team: UAE Emirates. The climber finished in the top 10 of the 2019 Tour of Spain's Grand Prix de la Montagne.
Since 2021, Sergio Henao has been riding for the South African team Qhubeka Assos alongside cycling greats such as Fabio Aru, Simon Clarke, Giacomo Nizzolo, Victor Campenaerts and Domenico pozzovivo.
