He grew up in the Colombian mountains with Nairo Quintana, who is none other than his older brother. His resemblance to the national hero is obvious: they are often confused. Far from being annoyed by this, Dayer Quintana has fashioned his own success story to emerge from the Condor's shadow.
First turned to ball sports, Dayer Quintana eventually developed a taste for cycling in the wake of his brother. He gave his first pedal strokes in the team Boyacá es Para Vivirla, and then Alcaldía de Tunja.
In 2013, he crossed the Atlantic to join the Spanish formation Lizarte, reserve team of the Movistar stable. Profiled for the mountains, he asserted his climbing skills by reaching the second step of the podium of the Trofeo Santiago en Cos.
Professional cycling career
Building on his promising start, Dayer Quintana signed a professional contract with the UCI World Tour team Movistar for the 2014 season. He will remain there until 2018.
During these four years, Dayer Quintana competes in races on the international cycling calendar at the top level alongside Nairo, gaining experience.
He competed in such renowned classics as Paris-Roubaix, the Tour of Flanders and Milan-San Remo. The younger Quintana wins solo on the 3rd stage of the Tour of Austria, at the end of the Kitzbüheler Horn climb. He also achieved 5th place in the Ordizia Classic.
The following season, Dayer rides his first grand tour at the 2015 Giro!
Winner of the Tour de San Luis in 2016, he was not extended by Movistar in the absence of convincing results during the 2017 and 2018 seasons, apart from stage 6 of the Colombia Oro y Paz.
Teammate at Arkéa-Samsic
In 2020, Dayer Quintana reunites with his brother at Arkéa-Samsic, who was also recruited by the Brittany-based UCI ProTeam, an Ekoï partner.
He takes on the role of teammate, particularly during the Tour de France 2020, for the formation's leaders Nairo Quintana, Winner Anacona but also Warren Barguil and Nacer Bouhanni.
