Warren Barguil is a French cyclist born on October 28, 1991 in Hennebont, Morbihan. He is one of the Ekoï ambassadors.
After allowing you to know everything about Team Arkéa Samsic, it's time to look more in detail at its main riders. So, on this occasion, we offer you a focus on the Breton rider Warren Barguil.

Who is Warren Barguil?

Warren Barguil, nicknamed Wawa, is a cyclist who is classified as a climber-puncher.

The Breton rider began cycling at the age of 7 with BMX, a discipline he would practice for six years before turning to road cycling.

In 2009, for his second year as a junior, after several victories (including the Tour du Morbihan Juniors), he became Champion of France on road Juniors which allowed him to participate in the Tour of Istria.

In 2011, at the age of 19, and for his first participation, he won a stage of the Tour de l'Avenir under the colors of the French team and finished in 5th place overall.

In 2012, he joined the CC Etupes. This change of team allowed him to win many races that year, including the Essor Basque and the Essor Breton. On the Tour de l'Avenir, he did a full house: in addition to winning a stage, he took the general classification, the points classification and the mountain classification.

Warren Barguil's professional career

In 2013, Warren Barguil made his professional debut with the Argos-Shimano team, in which he had been a trainee during the 2012 season.
During the summer, while competing for the first time in his career in the Vuelta in Spain, he won his first stage in a grand tour, before repeating the feat three days later, at just 21 years old.

In 2014, while he had made the Tour de France his goal for the season, he was not selected for the race, despite his ninth place in the Tour of Catalonia. He then took part in the Tour of Spain, which he concluded without a stage win but in eighth place overall. Warren Barguil here holds his first top 10 in a grand tour.

In 2015, Warren Barguil finally discovered the roads of the Tour de France and finished fourteenth overall, and third best young rider behind Nairo Quintana and Romain Bardet. The following year, he would reveal that, following a crash on stage 10, he had finished the race with a fractured kneecap.

In January 2016, while participating in a training camp in Spain with his team, Warren Barguil and five of his teammates were hit by a car. Despite a fractured scaphoid and a knee injury, he returned to competition in March at the Tour of Catalonia. Despite finishing third overall in the Tour of Switzerland and sixth in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, he was unable to return to his true level: he finished 23rd in the Tour de France when he was aiming for a top 10 finish and retired after 3 stages in the Tour of Spain.

In 2017, as the Giant-Alpecin team renamed itself Sunweb, Warren Barguil shone again on the roads of the Tour de France. Beaten in a sprint by Rigoberto Uran on stage nine, he donned the best climber polka-dot jersey that day, which he would keep until the finish in Paris, on the Champs-Elysées. But, he was not content with the polka dot jersey as, a few days later, he finally won for the first time in his career on the roads of the Tour de France, before repeating this feat alone at the top of the Col d'Izoard during the eighteenth stage, becoming the darling of the public and triggering a real "wawa mania" on his way.
To reward the courage of the man who did not hesitate to take several breakaways and attack several times to defend his best climber's jersey, he was also voted super combative.

In 2018, to everyone's surprise, he signed with the Breton Fortuneo-Samsic team, ranked in the Pro Continental. After racing on a World Tour team, Wawa says he wanted to reconnect with his Breton roots.

In 2019, after a reassuring start to the season, he was the victim of a heavy crash on Paris-Nice that forced him to abandon due to a sprained neck. While he resumed on the Tour of Catalonia, he fractured his iliac bone in a new fall.
At the end of June, he took his revenge by becoming French Road Champion for the first time in his career as a professional.
A few days later, he therefore took the start of the Tour de France with the tricolor jersey on his shoulders. Despite several attempts, he did not win a stage but finished this Tour de France in tenth place overall.
In August, he almost won his first stage race on the Artic Race of Norway, but finally failed to win second place for 1 second after the last stage. His contract with Team Arkéa-Samsic (the team's new name) is extended for 3 years, despite Nairo Quintana joining the team.

In 2020, while the season is heavily impacted by Covid, Warren Barguil takes part in few races.
After a satisfactory start to the season (2nd in the Drôme Classic), he participated in September in the Tour de France with the mission of supporting Nairo Quintana. Finally, following the Colombian rider's lack of form, the Breton rider took the leadership of the team and finished in 15th place overall.
He concluded his season with several top 10 finishes in the Arden classics (4th in the Flèche Wallonne, 5th in Flèche Brabançonne, 9th in Liège-Bastogne-Liège).
