Avec plus de 3000m de dénivelé pour 169,7 kilomètres autour de Bessèges, la troisième étape n’était pas forcément favorable aux sprinteurs. Au programme, le col des Brousses, côte de première catégorie, à gravir trois fois, dont la dernière fois à une dizaine de kilomètres de la ligne.   Distancé dans les bosses, Arnaud de Lie est parvenu à revenir sur le groupe de tête à 4 kilomètres de l'arrivée. Impatient, il a alors sonné la charge à deux kilomètres de l’arrivée, en vain. Déterminé, le sprinteur belge a surpris ses adversaires et les commentateurs en jaillissant au meilleur des moments pour l’emporter “facilement”. Il finit 7ème de cette 53ème édition. Distancé, Arnaud De Lie est parvenu à revenir dans le groupe de tête. Il a même placé une attaque à 2 km de l’arrivée, en vain. Mais ce n’était que partie remise puisqu’il a facilement remporté le sprint.

Quelques jours après la 3ème place de son coéquipier allemand Max Walscheid, lors de la 1ère étape du Saudi Tour, Simone Consonni décide de faire parler la poudre et de s'illustrer de la plus belle des manières. Dans un paysage digne des décors de Quantum of Solace, le sprinteur italien déjoue tous les plans de l'équipe Jayco-Alula. Pourtant bien amené par son train, Dylan Groenewegen se retrouve, dans un premier temps, enfermé. Lançant son sprint à plus de 200 mètres de la ligne, dans des pourcentages compris entre 5 et 7%, le "hollandais volant" se fait finalement dépasser à 75 mètres du but par Consonni qui, à l'arrachée, franchit la ligne devant un autre transalpin Mattéo Malucelli. Il ne fallait pas lancer les hostilités trop tôt, dans ce sprint pour costauds !

In a finish built for the puncheurs, the young Belgian sprinter from the LOTTO-DESTINY team, won in the most beautiful way by showing strength and tactics. Indeed, when the Danish rider Mads Petersen (Trek-Segafredo) attacked with less than 500m to go, Arnaud de Lie cleverly took his wheel before making a powerful and decisive acceleration in the last bend. The champion underlined at the finish line the work of his team throughout this first flat stage of 160 kilometers (45.47 km/h average). A work that allows him to become the provisional "lieder" of the 53rd Tour du Gard.

Last Marseillaise for the most Marseilles of this event“The Grand Prix de la Marseillaise is an event that is close to my heart because it takes place at home, especially since this year the Tour de la Provence will not take place. I finished second once in this race which I know by heart, and last year we won it. Just thinking about that memory still gives me chills. Yvon Caer assigned me a role: road captain, I am perhaps the rider who has competed the most in this race. And if 40 kilometers from the finish, Amaury passed the bump, he had to get in my wheel until the line. He listened, did what I advised him, and we played really well on the tactical moments. It remains a great moment in my career, I played my role to perfection, and I take a certain pride in it, in the same way as if I had won the race, for example. Sixième du classement mondial UCI en 2022 à tout juste 20 ans, le jeune sprinteur belge de l’équipe LOTTO-DSTNY Arnaud de Lie aborde ambitieusement l’année 2023. Il remporte la première course européenne UCI de la saison, la Classique de Valence, en Espagne. Une épreuve de 190 kilomètres animée par une échappée de cinq coureurs finalement reprise pour laisser place à un sprint bien géré, le “Taureau de Lescheret” étant parfaitement lancé par ses coéquipiers.   

Première victoire en World Tour de Bryan Coquard.  La quatrième étape du TDU s’est, comme prévu, jouée au sprint. Et c’est le sprinteur français de l’équipe COFIDIS qui s’est montré le plus malin. A 300 mètres de la ligne, il a allumé la mèche, surprenant ses rivaux impuissants et incapables de sauter dans la roue. Une victoire savoureuse pour celui qui avait à sept reprises dû se contenter de deuxièmes places, dont une, mythique, face à Marcel Kittel sur la quatrième étape du Tour de France 2016. In the counter-attack group, Caleb Ewan (Lotto-DSTNY) had to settle for 18th place but he said he was "very satisfied with the sensations (...) on the bike" and said he was "looking forward to to be at the Tour Down Under.” By making a salient attack on his pursuers just two kilometers from the finish, Luke Flapp (22) won for the second year in a row.
