Bike Lighting

Bike lighting is the safety gear that makes you visible from nightfall or in low-visibility conditions, on the road as well as in town. White front light, red rear light, lumen output and battery life: every parameter matters to ride in compliance with the Highway Code. EKOI selects fixed front and rear lights, compliant with the decree of November 27, 2024, designed for all your riding disciplines. Whether you are looking for a compact kit for your urban commutes or a powerful headlight for your night rides, find the lighting suited to your visibility and safety needs.

Which bike light should you choose for your riding discipline?

A compact front/rear kit of 100 to 300 lumens, USB-C rechargeable, is more than enough for urban riding in DRL mode (daytime running light, visible by day). For night rides on the road, gravel outings or long-distance training sessions, go for more powerful headlights, up to 1,800-2,000 lumens, with a reinforced casing and STVZO approval.

Whether you ride on road, in MTB or on gravel, or you are preparing for an ultra-distance event, the power and autonomy of your lighting must adapt to the terrain, the duration of the effort and the ambient light level.

Front light and rear light: power, color and beam pattern

The front light must be white or yellow, non-dazzling and aimed slightly downward so as not to bother other road users. Since the decree of November 27, 2024, the fixed red rear light is also mandatory: flashing modes are now prohibited, even at the rear.

In town, 200 to 400 lumens at the front are generally enough. On night rides, gravel or early-morning long rides, opt for higher output paired with good optics to anticipate obstacles.

Regulations: what the Highway Code says about bike lighting

Articles R313-4 and R313-5 require lighting only at night or when visibility is insufficient: a non-dazzling white or yellow front light, and a fixed red rear light. Riding without compliant lighting in these conditions exposes you to a fixed fine of €11.

Decree no. 2024-1074 now authorizes lighting devices worn by the rider (helmet, vest, shoes), provided they are used as a complement to the lights mounted on the bike, not as a replacement.

Battery life, USB charging and water resistance

Battery life ranges from 3 to more than 12 hours depending on the lighting mode used. USB-C charging has become standard, with a battery indicator particularly useful for long rides where recharging on the go is not possible.

The IPX protection rating guarantees resistance to water and dust: an essential criterion for riding in all weather, especially in autumn and winter.

Complete your bike safety kit

Lighting alone is not enough: reflectors, reflective clothing and a properly equipped helmet complete your visibility, especially for daily urban commutes or morning training sessions in triathlon, on the road or for urban use.

At EKOI, find the full range of bike safety accessories, from road helmets to front and rear lights, so you can ride visible in all your disciplines: road, MTB, gravel, triathlon, running, urban and ultra-distance.
